River Scheldt

Pilotage services can be traced back centuries and were provided at locations where seagoing vessels required assistance to sail to the sea.

Loodswezen in the Scheldemonden region has a rich and varied past. This is because the river Schelde formed a border between two countries, with all the problems arising from this situation. As a result, by 1839 Loodswezen had already been subject to100 years of rivalry from the Belgian pilots.

These days, however, the Flemish and Dutch Loodswezen have a good working relationship and contribute to providing a valuable service.

The links below indicate the most important moments in the history of the Scheldemonden Loodswezen.
